A professional boat is a long-term investment. It is exposed to, for example, saltwater, heavy loads, impacts, and daily use year after year. The choice of material determines how long the boat remains operational and what it costs to own over ten or twenty years.
For this reason, the standard for professional use is marine-grade aluminum, or more specifically aluminum alloy 5083.
What is marine-grade aluminum 5083?
5083 is an aluminum alloy whose main alloying element is magnesium (4.0–4.9%). It also contains manganese and chromium, which further improve its corrosion resistance. It is a standard material worldwide in the boatbuilding and shipbuilding industry and is used in the hulls, decks, and structures of many vessels.
The hull, deck, and cabin of ALUCAT® boats are all made from 5083 marine-grade aluminum. Using the same material throughout the entire boat ensures a uniform structure and simplifies maintenance.

Excellent corrosion resistance ensures long service life
5083 forms a natural oxide layer on its surface, which protects the metal from corrosion. The layer regenerates itself, meaning it is self-healing. In practice, this means the boat does not require additional protective coatings or treatments to prevent corrosion and rust.
In saltwater, this property is crucial. Steel corrodes and therefore requires maintenance and protective coatings. Fiberglass, on the other hand, gradually becomes brittle under UV exposure and requires recoating. Aluminum withstands decades without rusting and does not require constant maintenance.
Impact-resistant structure
5083 is a high-strength alloy that retains its properties extremely well even after welding. This is essential in boat construction, as the heat from welding weakens many metals. 5083 withstands heavy use without significant loss of strength.
In practice, this means the boat remains structurally sound even under heavy use, impacts, and the stresses of waves year after year.

The aluminum surface also withstands abrasion and stress caused by heavy loads.
Easy maintenance and repair of damage
An aluminum boat does not require recoating or special maintenance to remain in good condition. Under normal professional use, regular washing and inspection are sufficient.
If the boat is damaged, aluminum is easy to repair. A single section can be cut out and replaced with a new plate without taking the entire boat out of service for an extended period in dry dock. The structure of ALUCAT® boats is designed so that components are replaceable and upgradeable. The boat can be kept operational throughout its lifecycle without requiring major new investments.
Long lifecycle means lower total cost of ownership
A well-built aluminum boat lasts 25–30 years or more in professional use. During this time, aluminum does not deteriorate on its own, provided that basic maintenance is properly carried out.
When comparing the purchase price to total lifecycle costs, the cost-effectiveness of aluminum becomes clearly evident. Less maintenance, less downtime, and lower repair costs. Individual components can be replaced as needed, so replacing the entire boat is not necessary due to damage or wear.

Marine-grade aluminum withstands different weather conditions extremely well.
Recyclability as part of the lifecycle
Aluminum is one of the most highly recyclable structural materials in the world. It can be fully recycled without any loss of its properties. Recycling aluminum requires only about 5% of the energy needed to produce primary aluminum.
When a professional boat eventually reaches the end of its service life, the aluminum is recycled for reuse.
ALUCAT® builds in 5083 marine-grade aluminum
Every ALUCAT® boat, from the W6 model to the W35, is built entirely from 5083 marine-grade aluminum by hand at our factory in Ylöjärvi. The hull, deck, cabin, and structures are made from the same material, ensuring a uniform structure and simple maintenance throughout the entire lifecycle.
The boat is designed to last. Not just years, but decades.
