What should be taken into consideration when purchasing a professional vessel?

When acquiring a new professional vessel, it is important to define at an early stage the intended use and the operating conditions of the vessel. Will the vessel be required for year-round operation? How many personnel will be working on board? What kind of equipment and outfitting does the daily work require?

Below, we list the key factors to consider when purchasing a workboat.

1. Define the vessel’s intended purpose first

The vessel’s intended purpose guides the entire design process. Will your vessel be used for maintenance or logistics operations, as a rescue boat, a patrol boat, or for other governmental or public authority duties? The intended use affects factors such as the vessel’s size, equipment, and cabin requirements. At Alucat, we consider the vessel’s intended purpose to be the foundation of the entire design process, enabling us to help our customers achieve the perfect vessel for their operational needs.

2. How many personnel will be working on board?

After the intended use has been defined, it is important to determine how many personnel work on board the vessel during the day and what they need to perform their work.

It is not only a question of equipment, but also of workspace, safety, and ergonomics. Unobstructed movement on the deck and access to the vessel improve safety, especially when equipment is being transported or personnel are working on deck.

If the vessel is used year-round, an enclosed cabin with heating and air conditioning significantly improves working comfort. During longer work shifts, a break area, a toilet, and sufficient storage space are essential.

Good ergonomics are influenced by factors such as supportive seats, sufficient legroom, and the ability to operate the vessel while standing.

3. What will the vessel be used to transport?

If the vessel is used to transport equipment, it is worth defining at the very beginning of the procurement process what kind of cargo and equipment will be carried. Will it transport spare parts, tools, rescue equipment, or other heavy goods, for example?

The transportation requirement has a direct impact on the vessel’s size, carrying capacity, and the amount of deck space needed. For example, transporting vehicles or other heavy equipment requires significantly greater carrying capacity than transporting tools or other lighter equipment.

At the same time, it is worth considering how the equipment will be loaded onto the vessel. Is a crane needed for moving cargo, for example, and what lifting capacity is required? The width of the bow ramp is also important when large equipment is loaded onto the vessel.

4. What equipment and technical systems are required?

In addition to the intended use, personnel, and transportation of the required equipment, the vessel’s outfitting is an important part of the overall package.

Cranes, navigation and communication systems, work lighting, storage solutions, and, for example, specialized equipment required by authorities should be taken into account already during the planning phase.

Alucat designs the outfitting together with the customer to ensure that the equipment is positioned appropriately and safely.

5. In what conditions will the vessel be operated?

Is the vessel used in archipelagos, shallow waters, or offshore areas? Will your vessel be used year-round, for example in winter conditions?

The length of the working day also matters. Tasks lasting only a few hours place different demands on the vessel than full working days spent on the water.

The operating environment affects, among other things, the vessel’s size, draft, engine solutions, and cabin design.

A well-prepared request for quotation provides a solid foundation for the design process

A well-prepared request for quotation gives our design team a clear understanding of the intended use and the requirements set by the work.

Not every detail needs to be defined in advance. Our sales and design departments will help you find the right solutions, and, if necessary, we will also prepare preliminary layout drawings to help visualize the overall concept.
